Bubble Word Jam Difficulty Scale: How We Score Every Level
Every level page on this site shows a difficulty badge — Easy 1/5 through Brutal 5/5 — computed from our level database, never guessed. This page publishes the exact formula, the distribution across all 500 tracked levels (2 levels score 1/5 (Easy), 36 levels score 2/5 (Moderate), 80 levels score 3/5 (Tricky), 182 levels score 4/5 (Hard), 200 levels score 5/5 (Brutal)), and the 20 hardest boards in the game.
1. The formula, in plain English
The score starts from the size of the board, then adds points for the three things that actually cost players moves: ambiguous words, misleading category names, and reshuffled versions. Everything is counted from the same answer database that powers the level pages.
| Component | Points | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 8 categories | base 1 | Small board, few groups to confuse |
| 8-10 categories | base 2 | The standard board size |
| 11-13 categories | base 3 | Crowded board, more overlap |
| 14 or more categories | base 4 | The densest boards the game ships |
| 3+ heavy trap words | +1 | Words that each fit 25+ different categories game-wide (our regular trap-word bar is 10; for scoring we use the stricter 25 so the bonus means something) |
| Name-collision or nested category | +1 | A word matches another category's name, or one group hides entirely inside another, in any known version |
| 3+ known versions | +1 | The game keeps reshuffling this level — answer keys go stale fastest here |
The total is capped at 5 and floored at 1. Example: a 14-category board with 3 heavy trap words and a collision trap scores 4 + 1 + 1 = 5 (Brutal). A plain 9-category board with one trap word scores 2 (Moderate).
2. Difficulty distribution across all 500 levels
Computed at build time over every released level (1-500). The spread is top-heavy by design of the game, not of the formula: most boards ship with 10+ categories and Bubble Word Jam leans on ambiguity as its core mechanic.
| Score | Label | Levels | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/5 | Easy | 2 | 0.4% |
| 2/5 | Moderate | 36 | 7.2% |
| 3/5 | Tricky | 80 | 16.0% |
| 4/5 | Hard | 182 | 36.4% |
| 5/5 | Brutal | 200 | 40.0% |

4. How to use the score
- 4-5/5: solve by elimination. Never spend early merges on a word with two possible homes. Clear the tight, unambiguous groups first — the level page's step-by-step solve order names them for you.
- 3/5: one careful pass. Expect at least one misleading category name or a multi-category word; read the trap alerts before you start dragging.
- 1-2/5: just play. These boards are short and their words point one way. Save your boosters for something harder.
Pair the score with the trap-words field guide — on a 5/5 board the trap alerts are the difference between a clean solve and a wasted Hint.
5. Honest limits
The score measures ambiguity, not raw difficulty: it cannot see vocabulary you personally don't know, and it counts category names rather than judging how tricky the theme is. Reshuffled versions can change a level's true difficulty; we score the primary board and flag multi-version levels with a bonus instead. Every input — category counts, trap-word counts, collisions, version counts — is machine-counted from the merged answer database described on our about page.
FAQ
How is the Bubble Word Jam difficulty score calculated?
Start from a base score set by the number of categories on the board (fewer than 8 categories = 1, 8-10 = 2, 11-13 = 3, 14 or more = 4). Add 1 if the board contains 3 or more heavy trap words (words that each fit 25+ different categories game-wide), add 1 if any known version has a name-collision or nested-category trap, and add 1 if the level has been reshuffled into 3 or more known versions. The total is capped at 5.
What is the hardest level in Bubble Word Jam?
By our score, 200 of 500 tracked levels reach the maximum 5/5 (Brutal) — they combine 14+ categories, heavy trap words, and collision traps. The leaderboard above ranks the 20 toughest, ordered by score, then by how many times the game has reshuffled them.
Why do so many Bubble Word Jam levels score 4 or 5?
Because ambiguity is the game's core mechanic. Over half of all words fit more than one category, and most boards carry 10+ categories, so the base score starts high and trap bonuses push it higher. A 5/5 badge means "expect trap words and misleading category names", not "impossible".
Does a higher difficulty score mean the level takes more moves?
Not directly. The score measures ambiguity (trap words, overlapping names), not move pressure — 95.2% of boards allow the same 10-move budget regardless of difficulty. A high score tells you to spend those moves on unambiguous groups first and delay any word with two possible homes.
Can the difficulty of a level change?
Yes, in practice: the game reshuffles level content by app version, and a reshuffled board can have a different category count and different trap words. Our score uses the primary (v1) board and adds a bonus for levels with 3+ known versions, since those are the ones where answer keys most often go stale.
